Giuseppe Scaduto, born in 1946 and considered for decades the “boss” of Bagheria, died in prison on April 18, 2025, under circumstances that raise more than one doubt. News of his death was reported only days later, fueling suspicion that he may have died earlier and that the delay was deliberate to cover up an institutional disgrace: his final arrest occurred while he was undergoing dialysis in a clinic in Bagheria. He was transported by ambulance, dependent on oxygen, and suffering from a fractured femur.

Scaduto had spent nearly 40 years in prison. From 1991 to 2000, he served 9 years in the Pianosa prison, then under the 41-bis regime. Pianosa was later closed following international condemnations for its inhumane conditions: no beds, detainees forced to sleep on the floor in damp, mold-infested cells, and watched constantly. If they fell asleep, guards would wake them by throwing buckets of ice water.
Despite enduring that regime, no pentito (state witness) ever accused him of murder. He was labeled a mafia boss and scapegoated for political use by the system. He was released in 2006 for not having committed the crime, but never received any compensation.
His sister, a devout Catholic, law-abiding and deeply religious, fought for years to have the 41-bis regime removed. But she too paid a heavy price: when she passed away, she was denied a funeral in church because she was the sister of a “boss”, despite having no criminal record and having dedicated her life to faith.
In 2008, Scaduto was arrested again and released in 2016. Arrested once more in 2018, he was freed in 2023. In February 2025, terminally ill, he was taken from a private clinic in Bagheria where he was undergoing dialysis, arrested once more under oxygen support, and transferred to prison by ambulance.
He died in silence, under conditions that violated every basic human right. The true disgrace? He was never convicted of murder and was used as a symbol for headlines and political propaganda. A life of suffering, humiliation and instrumentalization, not justice.
So who really lost with his death?
Did Giuseppe Scaduto lose, finally freed from a life of torment?
Or did the State lose, having to create a new scapegoat to justify its abuses?
