The Sicilian People and the Betrayed Statute: When the Left and Right Have Betrayed Our Land
For years, Carlo Calenda along with political forces from both the left and the right have benefited from the non-enforcement – indeed, the violation – of the fundamental articles of the Sicilian Statute. A pact that was meant to protect the Sicilian people by ensuring that all resources, including minerals and energy, remain under the control of their rightful owners: the Sicilians. Today, however, these norms are trampled upon, and the benefits derived from such deprivation end up in the pockets of those in power.
The Paradox of Calenda
On one hand, Calenda tries to convince everyone that he stands with the Sicilian people, portraying himself as a defender of tradition and of the rights guaranteed by the Statute. On the other hand, his stance – born from a convenient agreement between left-wing and right-wing forces – reveals a compromise: maintaining a system that, in practice, violates the very pact that was supposed to protect the citizens. In fact, the Sicilian people continue to suffer from the expropriation of their energy and mineral resources, in direct violation of Article 33, which clearly states that every resource belongs to the Sicilians.
The Double Narrative and Changing Winds
Some ask: Has Calenda truly spoken in favor of the Sicilian people? Or is he merely repeating the classic Italian script, where political winds change according to convenience? Some even metaphorically suggest that one day the American President might invite the Sicilian people to become an “American state,” an extreme symbol of lost identity and sovereignty.
In Italy – and even more so in Sicily – when a politician presents himself as the champion of the people, it is often not out of genuine love for the citizens but rather to gain personal advantage, replacing those who betray the people for economic interests. Empty rhetoric thus becomes a tool to mask a system of interests that sacrifices the resources and future of the citizens in exchange for privileges.
The American Model: Listening to the People for Change
At the same time, a message of renewal and attentiveness to the people’s needs comes from America. The President and his Vice, who have managed to win popular support, are sending a strong signal: listening to the needs of the citizens is the foundation for real change. This leadership, which places the people’s needs at the center, stands in stark contrast to the facade-driven politics afflicting Italy, becoming a model for inclusive and responsible governance capable of inspiring an awakening not only in the United States but throughout Europe.
The Roots of a Warrior People
Politicians – both Italian and especially Sicilian – seem to forget our roots, a history of long battles spanning over 810 years, a tradition of courage and resistance that surpasses that of any other European nation. The Sicilian people, proud of their past, are tired of seeing their identity continuously betrayed.
This time, however, the rebellion will not be armed. It will be an act of true democracy, an exercise of the right to vote in protest, as enshrined in Article 104.5 of the 1957 Constitutional Law, which will finally send our incompetent and useless politicians into voluntary exile, for in Sicily they will have no free space where the people will hurl denunciations for years of betrayal and plundering.
The Awakening of the People
Today, a strong popular wind is blowing. Sicilians, also inspired by the American model and by a leadership that puts citizens at the center, are beginning to understand that the current system does not work for their benefit but rather for the interests of a few privileged individuals. People, tired of unfulfilled promises, face a crossroads: continue voting for a “new political messiah” – one that only changes the party’s name without altering the substance of the institutions – or choose a different path, where the right not to vote becomes a sign of protest against a system that has failed to guarantee dignity and prospects.
The battle cry is growing ever louder: “Ut Iterum Magna Sicilia!!”
A motto that expresses the hope for redemption, a call for a Sicily that frees itself from the chains of a betrayed pact and reclaims its destiny, placing the common good at its center.
Conclusions
The contrast between Calenda’s image – presented as a defender of the Statute and Sicilian rights – and the reality of a system that continues to expropriate the people’s resources is evident. When politicians speak in defense of the people without truly committing to their well-being, they do so in order to take the place of those who betray the citizens for personal economic interests.
Now, with the winds seemingly turning in favor of a popular awakening inspired by the American model – a leadership that listens to the people and acts in their favor – Sicily and all of Italy could be on the brink of a decisive turning point. The future will depend on the citizens’ ability to abandon illusions and reclaim their sovereignty, so that the Statute that once promised protection truly becomes the instrument of emancipation and justice that the Sicilians deserve.
